Mompreneur Photographer Series: Laura Harfield Photography (Ottawa, Ontario)

OMPS

Laura Harfield is an Ottawa Photographer with a beautiful outlook on life and an even more beautiful family. If you are a regular reader you may remember the Postcards from Paris that she designed.

After our interview you will find a Rafflecopter link where Laura is giving away a one-hour photo shoot for up to six people at the location of your choice, a DVD with all of your high-resolution, edited images, and a print release for you to print as you like. (Valid in Ottawa Ontario)

Let's start with the easy stuff! Tell me a little about your family.
I have been married to my wonderful husband for almost 3 years and I am a proud mama to two beautiful boys, aged 22 months & 3 months. We live in Ottawa, and have recently relocated from the west end to the east end. I love being home with my boys and feel so very lucky to get to watch them laugh and play and grow.

So sweet! How long have you been a photographer?
I have been taking photos for a long time - I can't remember a time when I didn't own a camera (or two) - but I started doing sessions with clients a little over a year ago.

How does being a mom influence your photography?
I know how special those precious, fleeting moments are, especially when our babies are little. I am always striving to capture those moments and freeze them in time so they can be remembered always.

Those moments really are far too fleeting! I don't think I ever understood that until I watched my little guy grow from a newborn to a toddler in the blink of an eye. Sigh. OK, moving on. What inspires your work?
To capture those defining moments -- the ones that tell a person's story and where they are in their life right now. I am also inspired by the simple joy and beauty of day-to-day life: a child's wide, curious eyes, a mama-to-be's perfect round tummy, the easy laughter shared among family.

If you could give one piece of advice to Momarazzis what would it be?
Take the photo, and then take it again from 2 or 3 other angles or perspectives. You will surprise yourself and come up with some interesting, beautiful shots!

That's excellent advice! What is the funniest thing that has ever happened to you on a shoot?
I had arrived at the location before the client and was scoping out different spots, taking some test photos, etc. All of a sudden a groundhog appeared on the rocks in front of me. I thought to myself "Oh, cute!" and turned on my camera hoping to grab a picture of the little guy. Next thing I knew he starts running RIGHT AT ME. I would have loved to see the look on my face as I scrambled backward trying to get out of his way. Turns out he was just running to his hole in the ground that was a few feet in front of me. Still, I was on guard for the rest of the shoot, just in case he decided to make a reappearance!

Yikes! What photography rules do you think need to be broken (sometimes)?
I think all of the "rules" can be broken to produce spectacular photos under the right circumstances. I think the real success of a photo is measured by the emotional response it provokes.

So, so true! So, it’s Saturday night at 10 PM. What are you most likely doing?
Peeking in on my sleeping babes before watching a DVD on my laptop (these days it's Gilmore Girls... for the tenth time, at least!)

If you could shoot a portrait of any celebrity who would you choose?
Tough call. Daniel Alfredsson would be up there (go Sens!). Kate Middleton would also be amazing. Or maybe Zac Efron. I really admire his... acting skills. :)
