Postcards from Paris Blog Carnival Wrap-up: Part 2

If you are new here you may want to start with this post in which I compare parenthood to Paris for the benefit of my very-pregnant and quite nervous friend. What followed from there was a blog carnival sponsored by My ChiChi Baby in which bloggers told beautiful, funny, sweet, and authentic stories. Part 1 of the wrap-up brought us smart advice and funny anecdotes from places like Vegas and Alberta.  Now in Part 2 I will be bringing you from small town life to the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Order an inflight drink and buckle-up. You are in for an exciting ride!

Paula over at Journey to 42 had me laughing and nodding enthusiastically at her comparison of parenthood to small town life. In small towns everyone knows your business and has an opinion to offer you (solicited or not!). Parenthood works in the same way. I think that Paula's advice on the topic is worth quoting in full:

"Being a parent feels a little like that!  Everybody knows your business and worst of all has an opinion that they will share with you at any given moment.  You may feel useless, unworthy, wrong ALL THE TIME!  But do not fear my little mama friend as that is far from the truth.  The best advice I can give is to stand tall, be polite, but follow your instincts.  It's true. Lots of people have raised little ones.  But no one has raised yours.  You are the only expert when it comes to your own child. Who cares if grandma at the end of the block spread the word that you took wee Sammy off the breast at 3 months?  You don't...that is your decision & one you don't have to justify to anyone!"

Mom's Little Helper does a beautiful job of reminding us to enjoy the precious, snuggly, moments while they last.  Of course, as parents, we can't always find bliss in every.single.moment (and trying to is probably the fastest way to set yourself up for disappointment). But we can find joy in small moments and cherish them. I absolutely agree with her on this one.

"On days just like today when I am trying to get to work on time and he decides that despite him being more than capable of doing it himself that I have to carry him;  it’s days like this that I get annoyed and snap at him to “just walk”.  It’s at these moments that I have to stop and realize that there will come a day in the not so distant future that my carrying him will not be an option and I should embrace his snuggling tightly into me as I make our way out the door, bags in hand."

Rebecca over at Little Miss Maman offers up some gold nugget pieces of advice for new moms. She tells us that although she is gently trying to teach her littlest one to sleep on his own at the moment he falls asleep easiest when she rocks him. She writes:

"I am fairly certain he will not need to be rocked by the time he goes to university, so I do what works at the moment."

I also really needed to read her closing remarks. I have been guilty of mourning each passing milestone as it all seems to speed by so quickly. But the truth is that there are always great milestones ahead.

"As much as I get teary-eyed thinking about how fast they are growing up, I also can’t wait to see what kind of people they will become. In the meantime, I try to enjoying my book-craft-doll-little people-park- play dough-puzzle-filled days."

At Moments of Exhiliration Sara writes from the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro (complete with gorgeous photographs!). Sara tells us that Mt. Kilimanjaro is classified as a "walk-up" which means that almost anyone can do it and that most people believe it will be easy. She assures us that it is not. In fact, it is challenging and messy (messier than you would have ever imagined!).  And, like parenthood, mountain climbing can be isolating. But Sara reminds us to reach out for support.

"You’re surrounded by people on the same journey, yet you often feel incredibly alone. In a very real sense, it’s just you and the mountain. But that isolation can start to eat you apart from the inside. When you reach out, you find incredible support from your fellow climbers. That support can make the difference. Don’t be afraid to ask for help."

And when you get to that top of the mountain and see the view - oh the beauty of it all! But as Sara writes, "This is beautiful, yes, but the beauty comes as much from the thing itself as from the struggle." I'm going to tuck that little piece of advice away into my own heart. It is so very, very true.

And finally, our big winner, Amanda at Werdyab  finishes our journey with a beach vacation. She warns us that you should buckle up for the landing because it can be rough! But when you get there, although you will be overwhelmed and stumble a little, it's beautiful, more beautiful than you can imagine. Amanda touches on that one topic that seems to dominate parenting conversations - SLEEP.

"People who say that New York is the "city that never sleeps" have obviously never traveled to Parenthood!  The natives warned me to sleep before I got here, but you can't stock up on sleep like Doomsday Preppers do with cans of Spam.  Instead, just ask for help.  A quick nap in the hammock will help you feel like running on the beach again.  And calling housecleaning to tidy up your hotel room is never a bad idea."

Brilliant advice Amanda! Now if only housecleaning would answer when I call!

And with that we are back home. This trip has taken us around the world and back and I, for one, could use a nap and a stiff drink. And with any luck my travel guide might just let that happen for a few more minutes!

Thank-you so much to all of the bloggers and readers for coming on this trip with me! Your words have been beautiful, funny, and inspiring. You are amazing parents. And I am honoured to be on this journey with you.

And many, many, many thanks also to My ChiChi Baby for sponsoring all of this awesomeness.  My ChiChi Baby is a designer boutique with bargain store prices. Their slogan says it all: Let your child be classy, be loved, be ChiChi!

In part one of our wrap-up I showed you some of my favourite outfits. But I left out the best part. The shoes. OMG the shoes!

Postcards From Parenthood Wrap Up Part 1

If you are new here you may want to start with this post in which I compare parenthood to Paris for the benefit of my very-pregnant and quite-nervous friend. What followed from there was a blog carnival sponsored by My Chi Chi Baby in which bloggers told beautiful, funny, sweet, and authentic stories.

I want to first begin by thanking the bloggers for participating and to the rest of you for reading. I laughed, I cried, and I was inspired. It's taken me a while to get this wrap up done. Mostly because I needed some time to marinate in your words. I mixed them up with some lavender bath salts and took a good long soak in your stories. They were beautiful. Each of them in their own way. I'm now ready to share with you some of my favourite parts. To see the screenshots of their posts below just click on the image to enlarge it.

Jennifer's post had me from Scantily Clad Mother Sums up Whole Parenting Experience in 638 word Postcard from Vegas. With a title like that you know you are in for a ride. And she certainly delivers! New moms listen-up! When people tell you that you won't ever sleep again they are very wrong. You will sleep. It just might be face down in some cheerios.

OutlawMama had me absolutely cracking-up and both wanting to go to Mardi Gras and being thankful that I've never been.

Dawn at Happiness Cubed is a girl after my own Mama-heart. She sees the beauty in motherhood. I see the beauty in her. As the mother of 3 she wrote her postcard from home with broken crayons and decorated it with a coffee ring. She's keeping it real Mama-style. But what really got me was her comment on my Facebook wall.  Say it with me now.... aaaawwwwwww.

Jennifer over at A Mother's Fitness to Love inspires us to travel to that far off land of motherhood where everything is different and life is chaotic while still remaining true to ourselves. She reminds us that we need to take the time to take care of our physical and emotional health. This was a post I really needed. Especially as I was preparing for my first overnight trip away from Mac and feeling guilt, guilt, guilt. I came back refreshed, more in love with my wife than ever, and excited to see my baby. She was right.

That covers part 1 of our journey. My eyes are too weary to keep driving so I'm going to have to pull over and try to find a motel that doesn't house a murderous local living in the last room. I hope you'll travel with me again tomorrow.

This carnival was sponsored by MyChiChi Baby, a designer children's boutique without the designer boutique price tag. MyChiChi Baby was the perfect fit for this carnival because it allows moms to dress their babies like they could be on a teen-tiny-tots runway in Paris while spending like they are on Canal Street in New York City. The clothes are adorable, affordable, and very high quality. You really can't go wrong with this site! Here are a few of my favourites. Click on the images to take you to their page.

Bad to the Bone Couture $48

Child Star $35.25 (better known as the outfit that makes my uterus hurt and my wife scared that we will keep having babies until I have a girl)

And check out these funky ties only $5.85. I really think Mac can pull off the pink plaid.

And that's just a tease! Wait until you see the baby and kid shoes. Seriously! And at prices that allow you to splurge! You're welcome.

Please take a moment to go over to MyChiChi Baby and if you are so inclined like her on Facebook and follow her on twitter.

Last Minute Inspiration: Postcards from Parenthood Blog Carnival

My Postcards from Parenthood Blog Carnival goes live tomorrow and I could not be more excited! I can't wait to read your words of wisdom, joy, sadness, wit, and snark.

The carnival was inspired by a post I wrote for my friends Val and Marty as they embarked on their journey as first-time-parents-to-a-newborn. And I chose May 2nd as the date for the carnival as it was their precious daughter's due date. Well, I am happy to announce that baby Gabi made her way into the world a little early. I guess babies don't read boarding passes. Or maybe it was the airline's fault. Either way she arrived on Sunday April 29th and is the absolute picture of perfection. And, as predicted, her moms are totally rocking their now role.

At Val and Marty's baby shower we passed around miniature "postcards from Paris" and asked the parents in the room to fill them out with words of wisdom for the moms-to-be. I'd like to share a few with you today.

The first comes from Valerie's cousin Cathy:

The second comes from their friend and birth class instructor Julie (you may know Julie from her blog What I Would Tell You):

And finally, one from my always succinct and equally clever wife:

Feeling inspired? Write a post on your own site that relates to this topic and then insert this button somewhere on the post. Then come back tomorrow and link-up! If you run into any problems you can email me at kristin@mondayswithmac.com.

Postcards from Parenthood Blog Carnival

Step right up ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, to the greatest carnival on the world wide web. OK, so maybe THE greatest is a bit ambitious. But I promise that it will be full of fun, excitement, and inspiration.

A few months ago my dear (pregnant) friend expressed to me that she was feeling some trepidation about the impending arrival of her baby girl. Wanting to assure her that she would rock star her way right through the whole parenting journey, I wrote a post for her that compared parenthood to traveling to Paris.

And now, in honour of that precious little one’s due date, I am opening up the floor to all of you mommy and daddy bloggers. If you were to write a postcard from parenthood what would it say? Would you be writing from New York City? A pub in Dublin? The Serengeti? What advice would you give new parents just embarking on the journey?

Still pregnant? Write a postcard from the tarmac.

Not yet pregnant? Write a post on the postcards you have received and the postcard you hope to write.
Want to participate? Sometime on or before May 2nd write your own Postcard from Parenthood post on your blog. Somewhere in the post include this button.

Mondays with Mac

On Wednesday May 2nd come back here and link-up your post. Read and comment on the other posts from wise mamas and papas and they will do the same for you.  In the week that follows I will feature a number of your posts on my blog as well.

But wait! It gets even better! This carnival is being sponsored by My Chi Chi Baby who have generously offered up a $100 gift certificate to be given away to one lucky blogger. It’s totally like a real carnival now. Prizes and everything! Except that nobody is going to pressure you onto one of those rides that spins you around and around until someone pukes on you. But, lets face it, it’s parenthood so someone is probably going to puke on you anyway.

My Chi Chi Baby is a fabulous children’s boutique with discount store prices. You should probably go ahead and like them on facebook and follow them on twitter now.

If you think you will be participating in this carnival please leave me a comment below!

Postcards from Paris

Mac’s Aunties Valerie and Marty are preparing to welcome their daughter very soon. We are all very excited about the new addition at the Ireland household. A little friend for Mac, a shared experience for us, it’s all quite wonderful.

A few weeks ago my pregnant friend Valerie sent me a text telling me that she’s feeling nervous about impending motherhood. That’s a hard thing to admit when you are pregnant. It is made even more complicated when you have just spent thousands of dollars and a year of your life being poked and prodded by doctors to get pregnant. Anything less than pure jubilation feels ungrateful. I know because I’ve been there.

I want to validate her feelings and let her know that yes, motherhood is a lot of work and there will be days that are long and hard. But I also want to tell her that it is not all diapers and dishes and sleep deprivation. I want to tell her that not only will she be OK, she will rock this.

So imagine, my dear friend, that motherhood is like visiting France. You’ve wanted to visit France since you were a little girl. You sat your cabbage patch kid dolls around a pretend bistro table and served them lattes and biscotti and dreamed of the day you’d get to visit for real.

You had a lot to do before you would be ready. You needed to save up the money and find the right travel companion. And just when you were prepared to make the trip on your own you found her and decided to travel together. All of a sudden France sounded so wonderful that you thought you should pack up and move there forever. You were so excited when your passport arrived in the mail. You doodled FRANCE on your notebook, and underlined it with two, beautiful, solid lines. You were moving to France!

And then somewhere in the middle of packing you realized holy crap! We’re moving to France?!  It seems terrifying and overwhelming. You don’t know how to speak French. You realize that there’s so much about France that you don’t know.  You lie awake with your travel partner wondering if you made the right choice. Maybe you should have just taken a nice beach vacation instead.

Next, you begin to receive postcards from people already there and they tell you how dirty it is. They tell you that French people are rude and hard to understand. They warn you that everything over there is expensive and that life in France is far too busy.

And sometimes people who visited France decades ago overwhelm you with travel tips.  Take their advice in stride my friend and thank them for their wisdom. They are feeling nostalgic about their time en gay Paris and have only the best intentions. But you, you are going to rock Paris in your very own way.

Finally, the day arrives and you board the plane. The ride might be shorter or longer than you expected. It might be lovely with an enjoyable in-flight movie and free wine or you might be sitting next to someone who reeks of sweat and insists on chatting away the entire trip. It might be a smooth ride or you could hit some turbulence.

Eventually, you will land in Paris and survey your new world. It will be confusing at first. The airport staff will begin speaking in French before you’ve even had a chance to catch your breath and you’ll stumble around for a few days trying to figure it all out. But before you know it you will parlez très bien français.

Some days you’ll stay at a five star hotel, sip champagne on your balcony, and take in the spectacular views. Other days you’ll be crashing at a youth hostel where people are awake all hours of the night and someone pukes in your hair. But what nobody tells you is that you won’t really mind that much because vous êtes à Paris! And if you are going to be awake half the night with puke in your hair it might as well be in Paris!

And when morning comes, as it always does, you’ll notice that the view from the window at the hostel is the same as the one at the 5 star hotel. Because Paris is Paris regardless of your accommodations and gosh that Eiffel Tower is beautiful!

If I could send you a postcard from Paris, my dear friend, I would tell you that the weather here is beautiful. I would tell you that I am sitting in an adorable café on a cobblestone road sipping on café au laits and nibbling on croissants. I would tell you that the views are magnificent and that the locals are very friendly once you learn their language. I would tell you that I’m saving you a seat in this sweet little café and that I’m so glad we get to see France together.
